Through a gender lens: a scoping review of gendered experiences of AMR causes, burden and workforce in Nigeria

  23 May 2025

Nigeria faces high burdens of infectious and zoonotic diseases, leading to high antimicrobial use and misuse. This has a significant impact on women and girls, who are the majority of health workers and livestock custodians. A scoping review of 2000 peer-reviewed articles found clear gender differences in disease risk/resistance, health-seeking behavior, and healthcare access patterns. However, no evidence was found to suggest how gender might reinforce these vulnerabilities. This data should be considered when designing interventions to improve AMR and One Health in Nigeria.
